Your garden and gardening

Your garden and gardening

If you’ve got a garden, it’s your job to keep it tidy. Please mow the grass, pull out weeds, and don’t let rubbish build up. If you don’t, we may step in and charge you for putting it right.

If you can’t manage, you may qualify for our Assisted Gardening Scheme if you:

  • Are 70+ or disabled
  • Don’t live with anyone over 18
  • Don’t have any family local who can help

You can ask about community tool hire or see if local volunteers can lend a hand, email getinvolved@wchg.org.uk

Shared gardens

We keep shared gardens and green spaces neat and tidy, but you can help keep them lovely too. They’re for everyone to enjoy, a bit of green space for sitting, playing, or simply relaxing. To keep them nice, we all need to do our bit. Read our shared garden rules to find out what’s okay and what’s not.

We’re responsible for looking after our green spaces and trees. Find out more on our Green spaces and trees page.

Community gardening tool hire

Need a strimmer or mower? We’ve got tools you can borrow to keep your garden looking lovely. Our Community Gardening Tool Hire service is at Benchill Community Centre and open to tenants, local groups, and volunteers.

They are open: Mondays 10am–12pm, Wednesdays 1–3pm and Fridays 12–2pm.

How it works:

  • Book
  • It’s £5 per tool (cash only)
  • Bring ID with your address on it
  • We’ll show you how to use the tools
  • Clean and return the tools on time
